I am a responsible gun owner, with a Concealed Weapon Permit. I do NOT want to take anyone’s gun away from them. I merely want sensible legislation aimed at reducing the carnage caused by guns. For decades the NRA and the republican party has been trying to scare the public that Democrats are “coming for your guns”. It still hasn’t happened, and won’t happen because gun ownership is inscribed in the Bill of Rights. But in this country, rights come with responsibilities. Universal background checks are a first step to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. If it takes longer than 3 days to complete the check, the sale should still not happen until the check is complete.
I have heard the repeated claim that bad guys will always be able to get guns illegally. That may be true to some extent, but why should we continue to make it easy for them to do so? Along the same lines, ALL sales should require the same background check, including private sales and sales at gun shows. We need legislation to impose restrictions on the sale of bump-stocks, high-capacity magazines, and certain types of weapons which were never intended for the civilian market.
