My question is, “Why Not?” The humanitarian effect of not covering more people is beyond all reason. Some of the most vulnerable people in our society desperately need basic healthcare. Every one of us owe it to our fellow citizens to ease their suffering and help them lead productive lives. Will it cost the state money? Yes. The influx of money from the federal government will lead to more money circulating within the state’s economy, and some of this will revert to the state in the form of taxes. Who are we, and who do we want to be as citizens of South Carolina? Do we want to sit back and watch our neighbors suffer, or shall we lend the helping hand that is available. Our state’s refusal to accept Medicaid expansion – for which the federal government will pay 90% is, in my opinion, merely a mean-spirited political statement that hurts our citizens.
